"Introducing Miss Lizzie Borden of Fall River, Massachusetts, a most excellent girl detective and the most remarkable young woman ever to take on the criminal underworld in late 19th century New England. In these five early tales of mystery and adventure, Lizzie Borden is joined by her stubborn and stingy father Andrew; her jealous and weak-chinned sister Emma; her trusted companion Homer Thesinger the Boy Inventor; and the melancholy French scion Andre De Camp. AUTOGRAPHED

Part of the Images of America series from Arcadia Publishing. "Founded in 1803, Fall River, Massachusetts, changed its name the following year to Troy because, according to contemporary reports, a resident had visited Troy, New York, and enjoyed that city. Thirty years later, in 1834, the name was officially changed back to Fall River. The city's motto, "We'll Try," originates from the determination of its citizens to rebuild the city following a devastating fire in 1843. Once the capital of cotton textile manufacturing in the United States, by 1910, Fall River boasted 43 corporations, 222 mills and 3,800,000 spindles, producing two miles of cloth in every minute of every working day in the year. Fall River's workforce was comprised of immigrants from Ireland, England, Scotland, Canada, the Azores Islands, and, to a lesser extent, Poland, Italy, Greece, Russia, and Lebanon.." Karen Cheney

Lizzie Borden
by Karen Elizabeth Cheney

"Andrew Borden kept a frugal household in Fall River, Massachusetts, 1892. A tight-fisted, sometimes unscrupulous businessman, he was not the most popular man in the city. But when he and his second wife, Abby, were found brutally murdered, apparently by an axe, none of his business associates or tenants were charges with the crime. The person brought to trial was none other than Borden's daughter and Abby's stepdaughter, Lizzie. The suspect was a shy, well-bred young woman who could appear aloof and cold. But was she guilty? Tried in the court of public opinion long before a jury ruled on her guilt or innocence, Lizzie Borden remains one of the most mysterious, misunderstood figures in the history of New England crime." Part of the New England Remembers series. Paper, 5 ½" x 8 ½"; 82 pages.

Wicked conduct

Wicked Conduct
by Rory Raven

"The scribbled note belonged to Sarah M. Cornell, written the day before her body was found hanged in a rural pasture in Tiverton, Rhode Island [now Fall River]. An unmarried young woman of limited means, Sarah was four months pregnant, and a married Methodist minister stood accused as the father. Local authorities grew skeptical of Sarah's apparent suicide as Reverend Avery's conduct appeared increasingly suspect, and eventually the extensive evidence of their tortured relationship set off a groundswell of public interest and media attention never before seen in 1830s New England. This tragic crime left the nation clamoring for justice and became one of early America's most sensational murder trials." Paper; 6" x 9"; 126 pages

Fall River Boys

Fall River Boys
by Richard Renaldi

From the publisher: "In the spring of 2000, Richard Renaldi began making frequent trips to the small New England city of Fall River, Massachusetts. Situated just a short distance from the Atlantic coast, Fall River was once at the very center of American textile manufacturing. Renaldi's aim was to photograph the young men of Fall River coming of age amidst an industrial landscape well past its boom years. This extraordinary body of images -- portraits and landscapes -- is gathered here for the first time in Renaldi's second monograph, Fall River Boys. The resulting photographs, made over the course of nine years, are not brief encounters. Renaldi's quiet gaze considers his subjects with neither judgment nor irony. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of a city where young men grow into manhood surrounded by a landscape of idyllic natural beauty, frayed at the margins by darkened relics of an industrial past. Like the city of Fall River itself, the boys looking directly into Renaldi's lens face an uncertain future, at once hinting of possibility yet promising nothing." Hardcover, 2009, 10-1/4" x 12-1/4", 184 pages.

The Preliminary Hearing in the Borden Case
New Edition
by Harry Widdows, Kat Koorey, and Stefani Koorey, Ph.D.

The Preliminary Hearing phase of the Commonwealth vs. Lizzie A. Borden began on August 25 and lasted until September 1, 1892. The copy given to Lizzie's lawyer, Andrew Jennings, is the only one known to have survived. It has recently been discovered that this copy is, in fact, both incomplete and inaccurate, having been altered and edited for some long-forgotten reason. This new edition of the Preliminary Hearing combines a number of transcriptions from various sources in an effort to reproduce, as accurately and authentically as possible, the day-by-day proceedings of this all-important legal event in the history of the Borden murders of 1892. This new edition, for the first time, reads in the order in which the witnesses were called, includes the closing statements of the defense and prosecution and the judge's summation and verdict, and contains the entirety of Lizzie's own Inquest testimony which was read into the official record but not reproduced in the original transcription. Paper, 2005, 7" x 10", 522 pages.
